So, the other day I started talking about this injury but got sidetracked. It’s easy to do. My pal Ed, mentioned him earlier, works for a Towing Company in Akron, Ohio and is always telling me I lose focus too quick. Maybe I have ADHD, haha That’s a different kind of injury though!
Ok, so this injury did happen when I was a sophomore in High School. You see it more and more with athletics and teenagers. It was the dreaded ACL Tear. I remember watching a movie and the guys name was Aseel Tare. haha. He got hurt! Was like The Comebacks or something like that. Funny movie!
Anyways, so it was bright and early in the morning. 1st period to be exact. Must have been 1995 I think. We were playing flag football in gym class. Things were going good and my team was winning. I went out for a pass, jumped up to catch the ball, got drilled as I was in the air, came down and like hyper-extended my left leg. I fell down, but still caught the ball. So it felt weird for sure, i realized I couldn’t run anymore. I went to be the quaterback and stuff just felt funny when I tried to throw the ball. But i just figured I tweaked something. I really didn’t know much about injuries and that was one of the last things on my mind at the time.
The next few days I sat out of gym class. I didn’t really tell anyone I got hurt. During the school day it kept getting worse and worse though. Every time I would get in and out of my seat I could just feel stuff moving around my knee and it was painful. So, later that week the gym teacher was like, you have to have a note or you need to take class. So I was like, well i haven’t went to the doctor yet so i guess i’ll take gym class.
It was rough, I couldn’t throw or run. The phys ed teacher finally came up to me and he’s like, man you were really hurt huh. Maybe you should go to the doctor. Well, finally after my mom got sick of me whining about it, she finally took me in. They drained like 3 capsules of blood from my knee, not a good thing! It was a big ass needle, I don’t even know how they found all the room to stick it in there!
The doctors decided to scope it instead of an MRI. The scope was bad news. Torn Meniscus and no more ACL. He asked about prior leg injuries because it normally doesn’t get to be as bad as it was. I honestly think back when I was in second grade, something more serious happened when I fell out of that tree. We just didn’t know at the time.
Surgery was soon to follow and an agonizing rehab period. It was tough because I loved baseball and I knew that I was in jeopardy of missing the whole season. My surgery occurred the day after Thanksgiving. 4 hard months of rehab and I was cleared to play baseball!
Now, I will say that the ACL is pretty hard to come back from. I was able to play baseball after only four months post surgery which isn’t the norm. But, baseball wasn’t too aggressive on the knee. I was a catcher before this all happened, so that was one position that it would take awhile and some time before i’d be able to do that again. Was actually my senior year until I could catch again.
As a teaser….this was only my first major surgery!!
