Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, state of the art soft tissue technique that Dr. Adamson uses to treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Headache, back pain, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions which can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. All of these conditions have one thing in common: they are often the result of overused muscles. Over used muscles (and other soft tissues) cause changes in three ways:
- Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.)
- Accumulation of small tears (micro trauma)
- Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)
Each of these factors can cause your body to create tough, dense scar tissue in the affected areas. This scar tissue binds and ties down body tissues, which need to move freely. As scar tissue builds muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons cause tendinitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain.
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. Dr. Adamson uses her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments, and nerves to determine your precise condition. There are over 500 specific treatments unique to ART, which allows Dr. Adamson to identify and correct the specific problems affecting each individual patient. ART is not a generalized approach; it is tailored specifically to each patient’s needs.
